 Château de Bonaguil, Lot-et-Garonne

Château de Bonaguil

The first château on this site was probably built in the 12th century, but this one was constructed by Berenger de Roquefeuil, who styled himself “The noble, magnificent and most powerful lord, Berenger de Roquefeuil, lord and baron of the baronies of Roquefeuil, Blanquefort, Castelnau, Combret, Roquefre, Comptor de Nant”.

Bonaguil certainly is a magnificent castle and was designed to scare off the boldest of de Roquefeuil's enemies. Fortunately for us, the noble, magnificent and most egotistical lord built his castle so far off the medieval beaten track that no-one bothered to come to try to take it, and it's come down to us in a very well preserved state.

It's open to the public all year, don't miss it if you're in this area.
