The main street of St Cirq Lapopie, Lot

Main street of St Cirq Lapopie, Lot

St Cirq (pronounced san-seer) Lapopie features on a lot of tourist literature of France, and particularly the Lot département, with good reason. The ruins of the medieval fort are on the outcrop immediately above the river, the views from here are spectacular.

Take your time in visiting; if you're very lucky you might find yourself a parking space in the lower part of the village, but probably not, so be prepared for a long, steep walk. Its location makes St Cirq Lapopie a major tourist attraction and it has its share of craft and tourist shops, but in rural places like this in France people are generally interested in simply making a living while preserving their community, not in ripping off visitors.

This photograph was taken in tourist season (July), and we still managed to see the main street free of visitors. The views from the ruins of the medieval fort, on top of the rocky outcrop over the river, are spectacular.
