The Maison Carré, Nîmes, Gard

The Maison Carré, Nîmes

The name translates as 'The Square House'. It was built 5 AD in honour of Gaius and Lucius, adopted sons of the Emperor Augustus. Its remarkable state of preservation is probably due to the fact that it's been in almost constant use since it was built. At various times it's been used as a meeting room, Council chamber, stables, and file storage; it now houses a collection of Roman statuary and artifacts.
