Hotel Dieu, Beaune, Cote d'Or

Hotel Dieu in Beaune, Burgundy

The Hotel-Dieu was founded by Nicholas Rolin and his wife in 1443 to provide refuge and medical care for people suffering the worst effects of the 100 Years War. It was funded by the income from 130 acres of Burgundy's finest vineyards, and salt production. It carried on functioning as a hospital until 1971, no less, when it was superseded by a modern hospital built in Beaune. It's now a museum, and another one of those priceless French gems that are so well preserved because they've been used and maintained all their lives.
